Now is the time to seek out those late booking flight bargains to London and there are two very special reasons to go in August and September - it's the only time you can get to go inside two of London's most famous and historic buildings - Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament). The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace will be open daily from 26 July to 24 September. This is the ONLY time the public can see the inside of Buckingham Palace - The Queen's official residence in London. The State Rooms form the heart of the working palace and are lavishly furnished with some of the finest treasures from the Royal Collection. The palace's lovely gardens are also open and offer superb views of the palace and the 19th-century lake. If you're in London at this time a chance to see these magnificent rooms and gardens is not to be missed. More details and tickets via www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page570.asp The Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) will open this summer from 1 August - 30 September, with tours operating every few minutes. While British citizens can arrange to go any time, the Houses of Parliament are ONLY open to foreign visitors between these dates. More details and tickets via: www.parliament.uk/visiting/summer_opening.cfm An added bonus of visiting in August/September is that the notoriously fickle British weather offers the best chance of clear skies and warm sun, and there are fewer people as the tourist peak is over and many of the locals are away for their annual summer break.
Can't decide between a beach holiday or a sight seeing trip? You can have them both in this wonderful city! Every year between July and August, 2 miles of road along the River Seine gets transformed into a holiday extravaganza. So much so that if it wasn't for the magnificent views of Notre Dame or The Louvre you would never imagine you were in the heart of a major city but rather on the shores of the Mediterranean. Several tones of sand are shipped in, along with palm trees, beach chairs, picnic areas and even swimming pools. For the kids and those who are not content with just lying back and soaking up the sun, there are a huge amount of activities to choose from including climbing walls, bike hire, dance lessons, volleyball, art lessons, aqua gym, and even free concerts. This year the beach will be opened under the colours of French Polynesia bringing a true touch of paradise to the French capital. You will be able to initiate yourself with the Polynesian pirogue (canoe), take part in cultural workshops or even Tahitian dance lessons! A good reason to visit Paris in August is that it's blissfully quiet as most Parisians have the month off. Although a few cafés might close, those that stay open are very happy to have your business. You'll always find a seat on the Métro and your local boulangerie will never run out of your favourite bread. Many Parisians who remain in Paris claim that August is their favourite month, as it is the only time they truly get to discover their own city without the usual population hassles!
