Paris
Paris in the Spring - with less of a Sting
"I love Paris in the springtime". Cole Porter was right, spring is deservedly the classic time to visit this beautiful and glamorous city. The weather is usually warm and balmy, the air is fresh, the trees are decked in fresh green and blossom, and the flowers blooming.
Fewer tourists than in the peak summer months also mean shorter lines for the "must-see" attractions such as the Louvre (the world's largest palace housing the world's largest collection of art) and the Musée D'Orsay (once a railway station now host to the electrifying works of the impressionists and post-impressionists).
But there is much more to Paris than the 5 star tourist attractions. Some examples taken from our eclectic web page "101 Things to do in Paris."
#34. Musée Jacquemart-André
Complete with its fabulous collection of French, Dutch and Italian masters, this sumptuous Second Empire residence built for the art loving Jacquemart-André has been preserved more or less intact. Métro: Miromesnil/St-Philippe du Roule
#46. The white cobbled streets of Quartier Montorgueil
Home to the picturesque market street of rue Montorgueil where traditional butchers, fishmongers, flower shops and grocers ply there trade and an array of restaurants, cafés, music shops and fashion shops cater for the cool crowd. Métro: Sentier / Etienne Marcel
#57. Picnic in the Buttes Chaumont
A masterpiece of Baron Haussman, Paris's own miniature Central Park is a haven for nature lovers, Sunday strollers and picnickers. The park is one of the city's most original, boasting cliffs, belvederes, a suspension bridge and large lawns and prolific bird life. Métro: Butte Chaumont
#66. Musée de la Curiosité et de la Magie
Automations, distorting mirrors and optical illusions, things that float on thin air, a box for sawing people in half are all on display in this captivating museum. The best fun to be had is at the live show that takes place every half hour by a skilled magician. Métro: St-Paul/ Sully-Morland
The internet will produce cheap flights (try www.cheapflights.com) but finding good reliable value accommodation is harder. One solution is to stay in a rental rather than a hotel. You will have much more space, freedom to dress and behave as you want, you will be living like a native AND it will be much cheaper!
